On Saturday, June 13, 2015, C4K gathered its Teen Board, supporters, and members of the OKC community together to celebrate the beginning of summer! This year’s SKO was held on the Myriad Great Lawn which proved to be a beautiful and fun location given its proximity to other downtown events like the deadCENTER Film Festival. The weather started out a bit rainy but cleared at the start of the event - meaning the attendees were able to enjoy the event without getting soaked. Food was provided by popular OKC food trucks MOB Grill, Big Truck Tacos, & Kona Ice. Kids and adults of all ages enjoyed inflatable obstacle courses, a bounce castle, a rock climbing wall, face painting, and carnival style games!
The C4K Teen Board planned and hosted the entire event. “We really enjoy the Summer Kickoff because we know the importance of sports in our own lives and want to help every kid have the chance to play,” Teen Board President Baillie Miller said. During the event, the Teen Board collected new and gently used sporting goods of all types (cleats, bats, gloves, running shoes, balls, helmets, and protective pads) to put in the C4K Store where kids in need can shop. Each donation earned one raffle ticket, which could b put in various drawings to win amazing prizes from local businesses.
The money C4K raised from the sale of raffle tickets, event sponsorships, and donations at the event itself will directly support C4K’s “Ready to Run” program. “C4K has thousands of requests from kids of all ages who do not have running shoes and cannot safely participate in sports, school athletic training or even PE classes. C4K’s Ready to Run program will put running and sports shoes on kids who do not have them,” President Stacy McDaniel said of this new initiative. In total, the event raised over $27,000 dollars!
From the entire Board of Directors, Teen Board, and staff of C4K, we would like to say thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s event. We couldn’t have done it without you!
